 2. General Introduction

                            Ho Chi Minh City University of Education (HCMUE) was established on October 27th, 1976 by Decision No. 426/T.TG, signed by the Prime Minister.


HCMUE consists of 22 faculties, 9 centers, 1 institute, 1 high school, 14 offices, departments and divisions, and 1 publishing house. The university has 05 campuses and a dormitory holding more than 1,500 students.

            HCMUE has 854 staffs including 550 academic staffs. 6.5% of academic staffs are assistant professors; 35.4% are Ph.D holders and 43.4% are Master holders and 14.7% are bachelor (excellent graduates).

           At present, the university has 36 disciplines at the undergraduate level and 33 at the post-graduate level. The total number of students is over 25.000 including 100 foreign students (95% from Korea).


3. Historical Development

            Before 1975, it was the Faculty of Pedagogy, Saigon University, which was founded in 1957. In 1995, HCMUE used to be a member of Ho Chi Minh City National University. In 1999, the Government decided to separate HCMUE from Ho Chi Minh City National University to form a key university of education in southern Vietnam.

At present, HCMUE is one of seventeen key universities and one of the two largest universities of teachers’ training in Viet Nam.


           ² Mission:

HCMUE is a prestigious institution with high standards, and provides quality Education and Field-based Training. It is a dynamic and special University with some of the finest Human Resources Training and Scientific Research products (Basic science and Education Pedagogical Science) in the South of Vietnam.


² Functions:

 HCMUE is established to:

    produce teachers with bachelors and post - graduate degrees form the pre-school education level to higher education level;

    be an important scientific, educational, and cultural research center;

    assist  schools of education, education and  training departments of the provinces and cities in the South of Viet Nam and in the country;

    guarantee the quality and efficiency for the teachers’ training and scientific research.


² Award:

It was awarded by the President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam in 1986, a Third class Labor Decoration, a First class Labor Decoration in 1996 and a Third class Independence Decoration in 2007.


4. Introduction about training system


² Undergraduate:


- HCMUE consists of 22 faculties (35 disciplines) for bachelor degree; each with its own faculty and staff: Mathematics, Information Technology, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Vietnamese Philology and Literature, History, Geography, English, French, Russian, Chinese, Japanese, Political Education, Psychology and Education, Primary Education, Pre-School Education, National Defense Education, Special Education, Physical Education, and Domestic Science.


- HCMUE has two kinds of training: teachers training orientation (students are trained to become teachers) and non-teachers training orientation (students are train to become bachelor of natural sciences, bachelor of foreign language or social sciences and work for companies or organizations)

5. Education and Research Aims

            Developing high training standards, high - quality teachers with Bachelors’ degrees and post-graduates’ degrees for all levels and majors in order to provide human resource for kindergartens, Junior High School, Senior High Schools, School of Education, and Educational Organizations in the South of Vietnam.


            Retraining and continuing training in Professional Knowledge, Professional Skills for officers and teaching staffs. Diversifying training and academic programs in order to meet the diverse needs of development of human recourses with high standards in the social-cultural area.


            Doing research in science and industry, especially in Educational and Pedagogical Science in order to raise the quality of teaching staffs, professional skills and increase training quality; engaging in problem solving in economics, sociology, and culture of the country, especially in Ho Chi Minh City and in southern Viet Nam.


            Contributing to the development of curricula, textbooks, and teaching methodological reform in order to raise quality in teaching at all levels in the educational system.


Scientific research covers the following functions:

·  Doing research in fundamental, natural and social science; doing scientific to raise the quality of training;


·  Doing scientific research to raise the quality of training (including curriculum reform, teaching and methodological reform, applying computer science and communication industry to teaching and learning processes, verifying and estimating teaching quality and ensuring teaching quality), contributing effectively to the reform process at higher education levels of general education;


·  Doing research in psychology, pedagogy and methodology;


·  Doing research on the basics of regional and international education, promoting scientific solutions that meet the needs for future educational development and meet the missions of the key universities in education;


·  Doing research on the development of regional and national industry, history, social, culture, literature, eco-geography, population, and environment.


6. International Cooperation


            HCMUE has established international cooperation with over 130 universities and institutes, organizations, none-government organizations and companies in more than 30 countries. Many successful collaborative agreements have been developed between international universities and organizations and HCMUE in undergraduate and post-graduate training. The university has sent many lecturers to teach Vietnamese Language and Culture, Mathematics, Physics, Special Education, Literature at partners’ universities. Besides, the university has received many international lecturers and students to teach and study at the university. In addition, the universities have held a lot of international seminars, trainings courses and workshops which attracted a lot of international participants.


International cooperation covers the following issues:

·        Higher education for teachers and students to get Master’s and Doctoral degrees;

·        Faculty and Student Exchanges;

·        Organization of international conferences and workshops;

·        Organization of short-term training courses for foreign languages teachers, research on teaching resources and materials;

·        Teaching short-term course and long-term courses in Vietnamese Language, Vietnamese Culture and Vietnamese Studies for foreigners;

·        Scientific material exchange, facility supply.


In the future, the university hopes to maintain and develop further official cooperation, and expand the diversity of cooperation with universities and organizations all over the world.
